Art of Adaptation: 5 Famous Books Turned Movies

Thankfully, we live in an era where most famous books and novels are readily pictured. Be it in the form of movies, documentaries, series, or seasons, they somehow get displayed on cinema screens around the world.

And isn’t it better? This way, we get to experience so many stories, that otherwise most of us may never read.

This art of adaptation has been practiced for so long now. From Puzo’s Godfather to Jane Austen’s Emma, a lot of books have been trurned into movies.

However, does every book-come-movie become an instant hit? Or do some movies fail to do justice to the books?

Well, to answer this question, we’re going to examine some top movies, derived directly from books and novels.

We’ll see if these movies were exactly what their book offered or not. However, if not, we’ll explore the major changes most fans would want to know.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird
  2. Emma
  3. The Great Gatsby
  4. The Cider House Rules
  5. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  6. Bottom Line

To Kill a Mockingbird:

Harper Lee’s classic, To Kill a Mockingbird came to the screens in 1962. The book won the Pulitzer Prize, raising the bar high for the movie.

However, if you’ve read the book, and watched the movie, then it must be difficult to select one.

Atticus Finch, as displayed in the book, is no different in the movie. Moreover, Scout and Boo Radley, it was extremely hard for a viewer to figure out any discrepancy in their characters.

All the main characters, as they were depicted in the book, the movie doesn’t make any unnecessary additions or subtractions in them. For this reason, we think that To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book and an even better movie.

Emma

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice didn’t bulge from the actual book’s story. But, when we talk about Emma, it seems that the movie took inspiration from some parts of the book.

Nevertheless, Emma is still a humorous and funny movie to watch and becomes even funnier when watched with friends.

The Great Gatsby:

It’s a rare sight when a book-adapted movie gets around a budget of more than $100 million.

However, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo di Caprio, is an exception. It was created with a huge budget of $105 million and is full of romance, glamour, and Leo’s cheeky expressions.

Many critics hold the director Baz Luhrmann, as the sole responsible for failing to meet the mark set by the book. However, The Great Gatsby is the highest-grossing movie for the director, proving that critics can be wrong sometimes.

The Cider House Rules

Written by John Irving, it’s a classic that was published back in 1985. Owing to its popularity, a movie, based on the book was released in 1999.

The movie is set in a Maine orphanage. The story is dark, harsh, and ruthless at some points. But as the dust settles down, everything becomes clear. Acts that seemed ruthless now seem essential.

The movie focuses on the illegal abortions, bigotry, and problems that women have to face at society’s hands.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The book was published in 1964. However, in 1971 and 2005, two movies have already been made on this famous book.

A child, determined to take his family out of slumps finds himself stuck in a weird condition. His family, desperately wants to fulfill his dream of visiting the chocolate factory, but can’t. Mainly because they didn’t have enough to buy the chocolate bar.

However, Charlie’s parents brought him a present. To his surprise, it was a bar of Willy Wonka’s chocolate. As luck was on his side, Charlie got the golden ticket to visit the factory.

We’re pretty sure that most of us have only watched the movie. And chances are that most of you didn’t know that it was actually a book that the movie is based on.

Bottom Line:

Over the years, novels and books have bestowed us with great movies. Plus, books-based movies are one way to learn about them. Simply because this generation may not be as much into reading, as it is when it comes to watching movies.
